چکیده
Context. Ground based Cherenkov telescope systems measure astrophysical γ-ray emission against a background of cosmic-ray induced air showers. The subtraction of this background is a major challenge for the extraction of spectra and morphology of γ-ray sources. Aims. The unprecedented sensitivity of the new generation of ground based very-high-energy γ-ray experiments such as H.E.S.S. has lead to the discovery of many previously unknown extended sources. The analysis of such sources requires a range of different background modelling techniques. Here we describe some of the techniques that have been applied to data from the H.E.S.S. instrument and compare their

Ground based gamma-ray astronomy with Cherenkov Telescopes
Very-high-energy (>100 GeV) γ-ray astronomy is emerging as an important discipline in both high energy astrophysics and astro-particle physics. This field is currently dominated by Imaging Atmospheric-Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) and arrays of these telescopes. Such arrays have achieved the best angular resolution and energy flux sensitivity in the γ-ray domain and are still far from the fundam...
متن کاملHigh Energy Gamma Rays
This article reviews the present status of high energy γ-ray astronomy at energies above 30 MeV. Observations in the past decade using both spaceand ground-based experiments have been primarily responsible for giving a tremendous boost to our knowledge of the high energy Universe. High energy γ-rays have been detected from a wide range of Galactic and extragalactic astrophysical sources, such a...
متن کاملObservation of Extragalactic Sources of Very High Energy Γ-rays with the Magic Telescope
MAGIC is currently the largest single dish ground–based imaging air Cherenkov telescope in operation. During its first cycle of observations more than 20 extragalactic objects have been observed, and very high energy γ-ray signals have been detected in several of them. The results of this observations are presented, together with a discussion of the spectral characteristics and the flux variabi...
متن کاملImaging Very High Energy Gamma-Ray Telescopes
The technique of γ-ray astronomy at very high energies (VHE:> 100 GeV) with ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes is described, the H.E.S.S. array in Namibia serving as example. Mainly a discussion of the physical principles of the atmospheric Cherenkov technique is given, emphasizing its rapid development during the last decade. The present status is illustrated by two examples...
متن کامل2 00 9 Probing the Pulsar Wind in the γ - ray Binary System PSR B 1259 - 63 / SS 2883
The spectral energy distribution from the X-ray to the very high energy regime (> 100 GeV) has been investigated for the γ-ray binary system PSR B125963/SS2883 as a function of orbital phase within the framework of a simple model of a pulsar wind nebula. The emission model is based on the synchrotron radiation process for the X-ray regime and the inverse Compton scattering process boosting stel...
